In today's mini-article, we intend to discuss one of the methods used worldwide to improve the first and last mile of delivery, namely micro-mobility. Many people may not be familiar with the term micro-mobility, so we will first get acquainted with micro-mobility with a brief definition. We will then examine its role in reducing air pollution and improving urban transportation.

What is Micro-Mobility?

Metropolises such as Beijing, the capital of China, with an advanced urban transportation system that combines electric buses, high-speed trains, bicycles, and electric cars, are seeking to use electric scooters for even greater convenience for their citizens and to improve intra-city transportation.

This approach to using micro-mobility in transportation brings several benefits:

  • Increased speed in mobility
  • Reduction of air pollution
  • Reduction of environmental pollutants
  • Increased speed in the movement of goods within the city

Research shows that 56 percent of intra-city trips are less than 8 kilometers. The results of this research indicate that by using bicycles, electric scooters, and generally transportation methods based on micro-mobility, a significant volume of urban traffic can be reduced. Additionally, environmental and airborne pollutants will also see a significant decrease as a result.

According to Euronews, since 2015, more than 6 million dollars have been allocated for the establishment of related startups in this field. This massive influx of funding for launching related startups has led to a shift in people's approach towards increased use of electric scooters instead of personal cars in recent years.

These software applications, synchronized with electric scooters and city bicycles, allow you to be informed of the location of the nearest vehicle.

Additionally, many companies producing these electric scooters have provided route planning for destinations for the convenience of their customers. Thus, to go from one point to another, you do not need to know all the routes; the software intelligently finds the nearest and best route for you.

From Electric Cars to Scooters

The French company Peugeot is considered one of the leading companies in introducing and using the latest technologies in cars. Given the wave of manufacturing and producing electric and fuel-efficient cars in Europe, Peugeot has not lagged behind and has tried to bring its electric cars to global markets with more variety than its competitors.

The goal of many of these car manufacturing companies, from increasing the production of electric cars, is to enhance the comfort and usability for the driver and customer. These companies strive to increase the production of electric cars and improve their performance according to their customers' needs to maintain their market and be seen as the best solution for intra-city transportation.

According to Mike Ramsey, Chief Research Officer at Gartner: "Car manufacturing companies are trying to increase the attractiveness inside the car using the latest technologies. By 2040, we should witness an exciting competition between micro-mobility and car manufacturing companies."

What is hopeful in this area is the entry of these types of startups into Iran and the increased use of bicycles and, in the not-too-distant future, electric scooters. Among the companies that have recently started operating in the field of electric scooters is Robax.
